El Instituto Internacional Arayara, una organización sin fines de lucro que lleva más de 30 años trabajando en la defensa del medio ambiente y los derechos humanos, se ha sumado a la campaña #513VozesPorEscazu del Movimiento Escazú Brasil, una coalición de organizaciones que abogan por la ratificación del Acuerdo de Escazú por parte de Brasil. 

El Acuerdo de Escazú es un tratado internacional que garantiza el derecho de acceso a la información ambiental, la participación pública en los procesos de toma de decisiones ambientales y el acceso a la justicia en asuntos ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe. Brasil es uno de los países que aún no ha ratificado el acuerdo, es decir, en nuestro país el Acuerdo aún no ha sido votado por las cámaras legislativas para tener efecto legal vinculante aquí.

El movimiento Escazú Brasil tiene como objetivo concienciar a la población brasileña sobre la importancia del Acuerdo de Escazú y sensibilizar al gobierno brasileño para que lo ratifique lo más pronto posible. Además, el movimiento promueve acciones de participación de la sociedad civil en los temas relacionados con el acuerdo, centrándose en este momento en su implementación en nuestro país. Los líderes y activistas pueden involucrarse en la lucha por la ratificación del Acuerdo de Escazú por parte de Brasil de varias formas:

Participando en los esfuerzos de concienciación de la población brasileña sobre qué es el Acuerdo de Escazú y su importancia para Brasil.

Convenciendo al gobierno brasileño de ratificarlo rápidamente y luego promover medidas para su implementación plena y efectiva.

Promoviendo acciones de incidencia ante el gobierno brasileño y organismos internacionales.

La campaña “513 Voces por Escazú”

La campaña “513 Voces por Escazú” busca promover la conciencia pública sobre la intersección entre la justicia climática, los derechos humanos y la protección ambiental. El objetivo es movilizar a los activistas socioambientales para que compartan sus experiencias y mensajes sobre la importancia del Acuerdo de Escazú en Brasil. A través de videos grabados por activistas brasileños, la campaña busca dar voz a las personas comprometidas en la lucha socioambiental y resaltar de manera breve cómo las violaciones de derechos humanos se entrelazan con las violaciones ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe. Al enfatizar la necesidad de la ratificación del Acuerdo de Escazú, la campaña “513 Voces por Escazú” busca fomentar la participación pública y el acceso a la información y la justicia en cuestiones ambientales, fundamentales para lograr una sociedad más sostenible, justa y equitativa.

¿Cómo participar?

Para participar en la campaña, puedes crear un video de hasta 45 segundos en el que te presentes e invites a los parlamentarios de tu estado a apoyar la ratificación del acuerdo. Además, vale la pena resaltar un caso de lucha socioambiental con el que te identifiques y que se beneficiaría de la expansión de los derechos de acceso a la información, la justicia y la participación propuestos por el Acuerdo de Escazú. Utiliza tu creatividad y el poder de tu voz para promover la creación de más herramientas para la lucha ambiental y la protección de los derechos humanos, tanto en Brasil como en toda América Latina y el Caribe. The International Arayara Institute, a non-profit organization that has been active for over 30 years in environmental and human rights advocacy, has joined the #513VozesPorEscazu campaign by the Escazú Brazil Movement, a coalition of organizations advocating for the ratification of the Escazú Agreement by Brazil.

The Escazú Agreement is an international treaty that ensures the right to access environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making processes, and access to environmental justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. Brazil is one of the countries that has not yet ratified the agreement. In other words, the Agreement has not been voted on by the legislative bodies in our country to have legal binding effect here.

The Escazú Brazil movement aims to raise awareness among the Brazilian population about the importance of the Escazú Agreement and to urge the Brazilian government to ratify it as promptly as possible. Additionally, the movement promotes civil society engagement in agreement-related themes, with a current focus on its implementation in the country.

Leaders and activists can engage in the fight for the ratification of the Escazú Agreement by Brazil in various ways:

  • Participating in efforts to raise awareness among the Brazilian population about what the Escazú Agreement is and its significance for Brazil.
  • Persuading the Brazilian government to ratify it quickly, and subsequently, to promote measures for its full and effective implementation.
  • Promoting advocacy actions with the Brazilian government and international bodies.

 

The 513 Voices for Escazú Campaign

The 513 Voices for Escazú Campaign aims to promote public awareness about the intersection of climate justice, human rights, and environmental protection. The goal is to mobilize socio-environmental activists to share their experiences and messages about the importance of the Escazú Agreement in Brazil.

Through videos recorded by Brazilian activists, the campaign seeks to give voice to those engaged in socio-environmental advocacy and briefly highlight how human rights violations intersect with environmental violations in Latin America and the Caribbean. By emphasizing the need for the ratification of the Escazú Agreement, the 513 Voices for Escazú Campaign aims to promote public participation and access to information and justice in environmental matters, which are fundamental to achieving a more sustainable, fair, and equitable society.

How to Participate?

To participate in the campaign, you can create a video of up to 45 seconds in which you introduce yourself and invite the representatives of your state to support the ratification of the agreement. Additionally, it’s worth highlighting a case of socio-environmental advocacy that you identify with and that would benefit from the expansion of rights to access information, justice, and participation proposed by the Escazú Agreement. Use your creativity and the power of your voice to promote the creation of more tools for environmental advocacy and the protection of human rights in Brazil and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
